Proficiency Exams

These exams are open to applicants to the MS program in Computer Science and the MS program in Information Systems and Technology. They are intended for students who have learned the material by experience or on the job training, rather than in a class through a regionally accredited institution.

You are allowed to take an exam once. Failing an exam means that you will have to take the appropriate course at JHU/WSE/EP or the equivalent course at a regionally accredited school.

There are no fees for the exams.

Exams will not be returned to you. You will be notified only if you have passed or failed.

Sample exams are not available.

Scheduling An Exam

The exams are given at the Applied Physics Laboratory (443.778.6510), the Montgomery County Campus (301.294.7070), or the Dorsey Student Services Center (410.516.2300).

It is your responsibility to call the appropriate center and schedule the day and time. Once you have scheduled the exam, please contact E. Chlan so that the exam will be available on the correct day. You must allow at least a week for this. If less time is allowed, then we cannot guarantee that the exam will be available on the scheduled date. You are allowed 3 hours to take an exam. You will be asked to show identification.

If the results of the exam have a bearing on your registration then the exam must be taken by the following deadlines to allow for grading and reporting of results:

  • Summer: May 8
  • Fall: August 8
  • Spring: December 8

If you have not heard about your results, you should go to the in-person advising session anyhow. Results should be available there, even if it has not been possible to notify you prior to the registration.
