Keynote

Scott Almes worked at JHUAPL for 10 years specializing in geospatial systems and sensor fusion platforms. He currently works for Alarm.com building residential autonomous drones, specializing in system design and embedded Linux development. He has been teaching 605.202 Data Structures and 605.705 Software Safety since 2019.

“The Emergence of Safety in Software Engineering”

Safety is often one of the lowest priorities in a system, and more often one of the last aspects of a system design. Using modern safety techniques, software design practices and hazard analysis we can learn more from past mistakes and prevent future accidents from occurring. This talk will introduce basic concepts of “Safeware” and review culturally relevant examples of un-safe systems and their unintended consequences.

Conversations and Connections Workshops

5 Tips for Active Teaching and Learning in Canvas
Presented by Mel Rizzuto, Keneisha Murrell, and Liz Pallia

Discover five tips for using Canvas to support active teaching and learning through interaction with learners, content, and instructors. Strategies include embedded reflections in micro-lectures, journaling assignments, collaboration tools, communication features, and grading techniques.

Actionable Strategies for Inclusive Teaching
Presented by Sara Shunkwiler, Toni Picker, and Katie Springer

Learner variability is the norm, not the exception, and faculty play a key role in creating an inclusive learning environment. We will examine misconceptions around the ‘average’ learner and ways to create inclusive environments through a proactive approach to learner diversity. Examples will provide actionable strategies you can apply immediately in your courses.

A Conversation with WSE XR Innovation Award Winners
Moderated by Margo Williams

This past spring, the inaugural WSE XR Innovation Awards distributed 4 grants to WSE faculty to support extended reality (XR) projects connected to teaching, learning, and research. Join us for a panel session with the award winners in which they share about project details and how these projects will impact student learning.

A Conversation with Faculty Forward Fellows
Moderated by Olysha Magruder and Osmara Salas

In this panel session, you will have the opportunity to meet and converse with Faculty Forward Fellows and learn more about the program, now in its fourth year with over 80 participants across JHU. Several graduates will discuss what they learned, the value of the program, and how they are implementing changes to their teaching practices. Find out more about the upcoming cohort including some exciting new changes and opportunities.
