Digital engineering is an integrated, digital approach to using authoritative sources of systems data and models throughout the life cycle of a system. Traditional systems engineering practices are updated to take advantage of computational technology, modeling, analytics, and data science. This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of digital engineering as it pertains to space systems as well as the advantages and disadvantages to using digital engineering for space. All aspects of digital engineering will be explored in this course including model-based engineering (MBE), model-based design (MBD), and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). System architecting will also be explored including how digital engineering can enhance the system architecting process.
