The course will focus on an analytical system performance technique known as Availability or Exergy Analysis, which is based on the second law of thermodynamics. The course focuses on traditional power and refrigeration systems. However, nontraditional power generation systems will be considered by way of a special project of each student's choice. It will include an engineering description of the state of the art of the selected topic (e.g., wind or solar power, fuel cell, etc.), and a second law performance analysis of a prototype system will be presented to the class. In addition to the power system topics, the availability analysis will be applied to the combustion and psychrometric processes. (Offered only occasionally.)
