This course addresses the scientific bases, technologies, and chronic viability of emerging neuroprosthetic devices. Examples include cochlear and retinal implants for sensory restoration, cortical and peripheral nervous systemand brain computer interface devices for deriving motor control and enabling afferent feedback, rehabilitative and therapeutic devices such as deep brain stimulators for Parkinson's disease, functional electrical stimulation systems for spinal cord injuries, and cognitive prosthetic systems for addressing brain trauma. Regulatory (FDA) challenges with emerging technologies and ethical considerations will also be addressed.
