2024 Master’s Recognition Ceremony
May 20 | 9 a.m.

The 2024 Master’s Recognition Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 20 at 9 a.m. on Homewood Field on the Homewood campus. The event will run for about two and a half hours, with a reception to follow. Parents and guests are welcome, and tickets are not required.

Information from the 2024 ceremony is provided below.

Application for Graduation

Congratulations on reaching your goal to earn a graduate certificate, master’s degree, or post-master’s certificate in engineering from Johns Hopkins University. We understand the sacrifices you have made to achieve this goal, and we applaud you for the time and effort you committed to complete the rigorous program.

In order to officially graduate, you will need to submit your graduation application in SIS.

How to Submit a Graduation Application

  1. Graduation applications are submitted online through SIS. Once you have logged into SIS, scroll to the registration column and click on “Program of Study”. Then click on “Apply to Graduate”.
  2. Pay the graduation fee of $100 upon receipt of an electronic bill notification from the Student Accounts Office.
  3. Please note that only graduates who complete degree requirements before the ceremony date can participate in Commencement activities.

After Submitting an Application

Shortly after the semester begins, students who have submitted the application for graduation will receive a preliminary letter stating that their names have been placed on the tentative graduation list for the semester in which they anticipate completing their degree requirements. If the application is received after the term begins, you can expect a confirmation notification within two weeks.

Commencement information will be sent via email in early March. To receive your diploma, you must pay all student accounts in full and resolve all outstanding charges of misconduct and violations of academic integrity. In the spring, you will receive an electronic bill notification to your JHU email account from Student Accounts. Your diploma will be sent at the end of the term in which you graduate to the address you have listed in SIS. Johns Hopkins University diplomas indicate the school (e.g., Whiting School of Engineering), degree, and major (e.g., Master of Science-Computer Science) without identifying your focus area/track or course modality (e.g., online).

More information about receiving your diploma can be found on the Office of the University Registrar’s website.

2024 Ceremony FAQ

The Whiting School Master’s Recognition Ceremony is the main ceremony intended for students from both the full- and part-time graduate programs. Students who have already conferred with their degree/certificate in summer 2023/fall 2023 and those who are expecting to confer with their degree/certificate in spring 2024 will receive invitations to RSVP directly from Marching Order; however, please note that an invitation to RSVP does not guarantee eligibility to participate or indicate confirmed degree completion. Please consult with your academic program if you have any questions about your conferral timeline and requirements.

Date: Monday, May 20

Time: 9 a.m. ET

Location: Homewood Field | 111 W University Pkwy | Baltimore, MD | 21210

Reception: Keyser Quad, directly following ceremony

All students who have completed or are nearing completion of their Master’s degree requirements will receive invitations to RSVP directly from Marching Order around the first week of March 2024. Each graduate will be required to RSVP to attend the ceremony and must RSVP by Wednesday, April 17.

All graduates and guests are welcome to attend the WSE Master’s Recognition Ceremony Reception directly after the graduation ceremony on the Keyser Quad on Homewood campus. Light hors d’oeuvres and activities for the entire family will be provided.

Please note, the reception will not open early. To give respect to all graduates and their guests, please do not leave Homewood Field until the ceremony has officially ended.

Family and friends are welcome to attend the ceremony and reception. Guests will not be provided with tickets, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Guests who need to book hotel accommodation are encouraged to do so as early as possible. Several local hotels are offering special rates for the families and friends of JHU graduates. For more information, please visit the JHU Commencement Hotels webpage.

This event will be livestreamed and anyone with internet access will be able to view it. Graduates unable to attend the ceremony in person will be recognized through a customized recognition slide. The livestream will be recorded and accessible after the ceremony.

Each graduate will need to wear appropriate regalia to participate in the ceremony. You will be able to order regalia during the Grad Fair, or online at jhu.shopoakhalli.com. The deadline for ordering regalia online is Friday, April 5.

Master’s regalia ordered online and will be shipped to the student’s desired home address.

Regalia can also be purchased at the bookstore starting on April 11 and will be available in store through commencement. There will be an extremely limited number of regalia available for purchase onsite the day of the ceremony.

Questions about regalia should be directed to Barnes & Noble Johns Hopkins at 410-662-5850.

The Grad Fair will take place from April 11 to 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the Johns Hopkins Barnes & Noble at 3330 Saint Paul Street. Vendors will be on hand with information about class rings, announcements, and diploma frames.

This short video shows how to wear and care for your regalia.

Students should plan to arrive by 7:30 a.m. to the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation in full regalia to check in. Any student who does not bring proper regalia will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony. Robing and lineup for the processional will take place in the gyms.

Each graduate will be sent an electronic name card prior to the ceremony. This card is very important as it dictates your place in the line-up and will be scanned as you cross the stage. Please make sure to download your name card before arrival. Graduates who have their electronic name cards do not need to check in and therefore can head directly to the Bob Scott gym for lineup.

Personal items, such as small purses or cameras, may not be carried across the stage. Please ask your guests to hold these items for you until after the ceremony.

Homewood Field will open to guests starting at 8 a.m. Guests will not be provided with tickets, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no limit to the number of guests.

GradImages will take pictures of each graduate as they walk the stage. The photographer will contact graduates directly after the event to offer various purchasing options.
