Artificial intelligence is advancing more rapidly than the legal frameworks that govern it. This course examines how laws related to intellectual property, tort liability, healthcare, finance, employment, privacy, and regulation apply to the development and deployment of AI systems at the state, federal, and international levels. Students will explore how organizations make strategic decisions about where to develop, train, deploy, and litigate AI technologies in response to differing regulatory environments. Through case studies—including generative AI and copyright, prediction markets and sports betting, AI in medicine, digital resurrection, and corporate regulatory strategy—students will analyze how legal requirements influence system design, deployment, and governance, and how AI technologies, in turn, shape legal and regulatory institutions. No prior legal background is required. The course is designed for students in computer science, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, and related fields who want to understand the legal and policy challenges surrounding the responsible development and deployment of AI systems.
