Fred L. Fontaine is a professor and the Jesse Sherman Chair of Electrical Engineering at The Cooper Union in New York. He received his BE and ME in electrical engineering from Cooper Union, his MS in Mathematics from NYU Courant, and PhD. in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. In addition to being a faculty member at Cooper Union, he was an instructor and curriculum manager for Lucent Bell Laboratories Technical Training, and has been the director for the Retraining Program for Immigrant Engineers at Cooper Union since 2003. He has worked on a number of funded research projects involving developing algorithms and simulation testbenches for radar and wireless communication systems performed in collaboration with R&D firms. He has advised over 40 master theses. His primary area of interest is applied mathematics for signal processing, which relies heavily on probability and stochastic processes, linear algebra, and analysis. His expertise includes statistical methods, machine learning, adaptive and robust algorithms, with applications including image and video processing, time-series analysis (e.g., financial and bio-signals), sensor array processing and communications. He is a member of IEEE professional society and Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies.
