Johns Hopkins Engineering has launched a new master’s degree in data analytics engineering. Offered through the Whiting School of Engineering’s Engineering for Professionals program, the advanced curriculum comprehensively addresses the study of the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data in practical and real-world contexts, with a specific focus on information management and data analytics.

Enrollment is now open for the summer 2026 session, which begins May 26. Ten courses are required to complete the master’s program.

The data analytics engineering master’s degree includes a core curriculum of advanced courses providing the skills to analyze large datasets, extract meaningful insights, and apply data-driven decision-making in their work. This knowledge enhances graduates’ ability to optimize processes, improve efficiency, and innovate solutions across various engineering disciplines. With expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization, data analytics engineers can tackle complex problems, predict outcomes, and contribute to strategic planning.

“Johns Hopkins University is recognized as providing world-class education and research in engineering and applied mathematics and science,” said Dan Horn, associate vice dean for professional education, Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals. “Through this online program, Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals will continue its leadership role in preparing students to make data-driven decisions for the betterment of society.”

There is an increasing demand for data analytics jobs that are primarily found in the computer systems design and related services industry sector (11.2%), followed by management of companies and enterprises (8.5%), and scientific research and development services (7.3%). Most jobs in data analytics require a bachelor’s degree (49%), and 40% of jobs posted between September 2023 and September 2024 required a master’s degree or higher. Some top companies currently recruiting in the field of data analytics include Microsoft, IBM, Deloitte, and Oracle (Lightcast Q3 2024 Data Set). All these job opportunities could be filled by graduates of this program.

Occupations such as data scientists, statisticians, and other mathematical science occupations have a projected growth rate of 22% over the next five years (Lightcast Q3 2024 Data Set). According to the Occupational Information Network from the U.S. Department of Labor, data scientists, statisticians, and other mathematical science occupations are all considered occupations with a bright outlook, meaning they are projected to grow faster than average (employment increase of 6% or more). Based on market demand and the accessibility and convenience of an online program, we expect this degree program to be popular.

Furthermore, there is no other data analytics engineering master’s degree program offered in the state of Maryland that focuses on the engineering aspects of designing and developing data analytics systems and methodologies that can be applied in many real-world situations. In view of the market demand for such a program, the online offering of the Master of Science in Data Analytics Engineering clearly meets a currently important need in the region.

“The data analytics engineering master’s degree program will educate and train practicing scientists and engineers to be able to carry out engineering and scientifically oriented research and development using their data analytics engineering knowledge and skills,” said Horn. “There is an increasing interest in applying data analytics engineering concepts and methodologies to a variety of industrial, commercial, organizational, and governmental processes. We stand ready to equip the next generation of data analytics engineers to meet that need.”
