Geetha Rajasekaran, an instructor in the Engineering for Professionals (EP) program in Computer Science and a computer scientist for the Social Security Administration, uses her computer and data science background to develop complex data processing systems, implement machine and deep learning models to solve business problems, and collaborate with team members to help streamline technological solutions.

What are the major challenges your industry is currently facing?

One of the major challenges the public sector faces, similar to the private sector, is hiring and identifying suitable individuals for available positions who can quickly adapt to the fast-evolving technology landscape.

How are you and your organization approaching these challenges?

We utilize current technologies to improve our recruitment processes and attract the right talents. We are fostering continuous learning to help our employees stay up to date with relevant technologies. I work closely with team members and provide guidance and insights on effectively utilizing new technologies, tools, and innovative approaches. In the public sector, there will be an increasing reliance on data-driven decision-making. Leveraging big data, advanced analytics and the integration of AI will enable us to improve public services and enhance operational efficiency.

What aspects of your work do you find most rewarding?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is to make a meaningful impact on the public through technology and innovative ideas.

How do you apply your professional experience in your role as an EP instructor and what do you enjoy most about teaching in the EP program?

I emphasize the importance of staying current with technological advancements and encouraging students to develop a mindset of continuous learning. What I enjoy most about teaching in the program is the opportunity to inspire and mentor the next generation of technology professionals. It is incredibly fulfilling to see students develop the skills they need to succeed in their careers. I also value the dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives in the classroom, which fosters a collaborative and stimulating learning environment. Helping students achieve their goals and witnessing their growth and success is truly gratifying.
