Dr. Mark Happel
Dr. Mark D. Happel is a Senior Information Scientist in the Air and Missile Defense Sector (AMDS) of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), where he performs signal processing and software engineering research and development projects. His recent projects have focused on statistical pattern recognition, time series analyses, and the development of image processing simulation systems. In addition, he has designed and conducted cognitive neuro-science experiments using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
He is currently an instructor in the JHU Engineering for Professionals (EP) Program. Prior to this, he held an appointment as an Associate Professorial Lecturer in Computer Science at the George Washington University, where he taught both graduate-level and undergraduate-level Computer Science courses for ten years.
Prior to coming to APL, Dr. Happel performed science and technology policy research at the RAND Corporation and both neuroscience and artificial intelligence research at the MITRE Corporation. He led a software engineering team that developed real-time, safety-critical, Ada-based jet engine control software for the USAF’s YF-22 and YF-23 fighter aircraft prototypes at GE Aircraft Engines, and performed digital hardware design and test at Northern Telecom, Inc. His first professional experience was as a nuclear-trained submarine officer in the US Navy, serving as the Reactor Controls Officer, Sonar Officer, and Weapons Officer onboard USS PHOENIX (SSN702).
Dr. Happel earned a B.S.E.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; an M.S.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida; and a D.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the George Washington University in Washington, DC.
