Personal Bio

Mr. John Bigelow is currently the Branch Supervisor for the Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD) at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). REDD is responsible for making scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs, and for exploring advanced concepts through prototyping for transition to APL sectors and sponsors. This organization performs advanced research and development in materials sciences, physics, biological sciences, information sciences, robotics and autonomous systems, and microelectronics as well as maintaining the laboratory’s advanced fabrication facilities.

Mr. Bigelow came to the lab after nearly 30 years in engineering and technical management positions in the Biomedicine, Defense and Aerospace sectors where he held positions such as Director of Advanced Marketing & Technology, Director of Strategic Planning, and Vice President of Engineering where he lead over 200 staff in the development of advanced avionics systems. He spent his early career in the development of signal processing and communications systems.

John joined the Biomedicine Business Area at APL in 2005 as an Assistant Program Manager for the four year Revolutionizing Prosthetics program where he helped structure and execute this dynamic and challenging research and development effort. John rose to Branch Manager and acting Program Area Manager while helping to build the Biomedicine business. John helped to facilitate the structuring and transition process to REDD, combining the Research Center, the Biomedicine Business Area and the former Engineering and Advanced Fabrication organizations and was appointed Branch Supervisor where he manages over 400 staff who are busily “inventing the future”.
