This course offers an overview of the structure-property relationship for metal, ceramic, and polymeric materials commonly used in biomedical applications. Differences in material properties between these synthetic materials and native biologic materials and the biological consequences of these differences will also be identified. Additionally, the foreign body response of a biological system to a synthetic material will be discussed along with common strategies to control the host response. Interactive lectures will re-enforce critical concepts and homework assignments will be formatted as case studies to provide real world examples.
