Intro to Ocean Engineering provides a practical, engineering-focused overview of the end-to-end lifecycle of ocean sensors and systems, from concept to deployment at sea. We will examine how oceanographic conditions influence data collection; survey acoustic and non-acoustic sensing technologies and their platforms (including ships, unmanned vehicles, and buoy systems); and learn core principles of system design such as ocean-going power, electrical engineering, and hydrodynamic modeling. The course also covers test and evaluation of ocean systems, including at-sea operations, test planning with Navy and U.S. Government partners, ship selection, and human factors, safety, and risk management.The course emphasizes institutional knowledge, and real-world case studies. It is designed as an engineering complement to science-based coursework in atmospheric sciences and oceanography and is intended for scientists and engineers seeking to improve their ability to design, deploy, and employ oceanographic sensing systems.
