Mr. Pardoe is a retired member of the Principal Professional Staff of the Applied Physics Laboratory.

Retired as Principal Professional Staff Member 2001

Project Manager 1996 – 2001   Responsible for task definition, staffing, progress measurement tracking and reporting, and delivery of completed work product.

·   SSUSI (Special Sensor Ultraviolet Imager) A space-borne sensor for military space weather prediction

·   GUVI (Global Ultraviolet Imager) A NASA instrument for measuring ionospheric radiation

·   UPOS (University Partnering for Observational Sensing) A cooperative program with University of Alaska researchers to measure and characterize polar radiation emissions.

·   Doppler Radar – A research program for NASA to investigate the applicability of Doppler radar to ice flow measurements

·   Space Instruments – NASA efforts to develop promising instrument technology

Proposal Manager 1996 – 1998 In addition to those of a project manager the proposal manager also oversees the preparation of the final proposal to be submitted to the prospective sponsor.

·   MESSENGER – Spacecraft mission to explore the planet Mercury.  The proposal was ultimately successful and the spacecraft has successfully completed its mission orbiting Mercury

·   Helios (Now Stereo) Dual spacecraft mission to do stereoscopic imaging of the sun. The proposal also was ultimately successful, and the twin spacecraft are now returning incredible images of solar activity.

Assistant Project Manager 1991 – 1996 Maintained the complete schedule for this project, prepared and disseminated regular progress reports, made regular status presentations to APL management and sponsor.

·         MSX (Mid-Course Space Experiment) The largest spacecraft ever built by APL, MSX was a Ballistic Missile Defense Organization program with numerous technical and managerial challenges.  It was finally retired after serving as an adjunct to the US Air Force space surveillance program following the highly successful completion of its original mapping mission.

System Engineer 1987 – 1996

·         ARIA/SMILS An Air Force program for evaluating the accuracy of ICBM’s launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base to the Pacific Missile Test Range.

Senior Staff Engineer 1977 – 1987

·         Delta 180 – 181 and Janus – Specified, procured, tested, and installed ground station support equipment at a network of remote tracking stations that were upgraded for these preliminary Strategic Defense Initiative Organization programs

·         Instrumentation Package program – Designed and supervised the construction of sensor preamplifier and signal conditioning hardware to space-borne quality levels; continued with field testing, pre-launch integration, launch and post-launch data retrieval

·         Space communications system analysis and design – Developed methodology and produced reports for major NASA missions on end-to-end bidirectional flow of data (SEASAT-A, IUE, ISEE, HEAO-A); assisted in planning and specification for NASA ground system for TDRSS; supervised production, testing, and installation of digital switching system for NASCOM; supervised production and testing of White Sands Distribution and Switching System; assisted in design, production testing, and installation of Shuttle Launch Support System at Merritt Island NASA tracking station;

·         Deep submergence electronics – Responsible for the development, construction and testing of paravane electronics composed of analog and digital circuitry to implement remote control and monitoring functions.

·         Tape Y program – Developed design for system to record high rate digital data on commercial VCR equipment

·         Special Area Protection Program (SAPP) – Developed ultra-low power sensor circuitry meeting severe package constraints for classified surveillance program.

Associate Engineer 1965 – 1977

·         NASA Skylab Project Impact on Manned Space Flight Network; developed special purpose digital equipment for MSFN

·         Black Crow countermeasure system (Vietnam era), developed time interval correlator equipment and display system for correlator
