Johns Hopkins Engineering has launched one of the first fully online artificial intelligence (AI) master’s and certificate programs in the nation. Offered through the Whiting School of Engineering’s Engineering for Professionals program, the new program’s advanced curriculum comprehensively addresses all aspects of artificial intelligence, preparing practicing scientists and engineers to design and create the essential AI-driven technology of the future.
Enrollment is now open for the summer 2020 session, which begins May 26. Ten courses are required to complete the master’s program; a certificate can be earned by completing four courses.
“Johns Hopkins University has been educating working professionals for nearly 100 years and has been a leader in delivering online engineering graduate education for nearly two decades,” said Daniel Horn, associate dean, Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals. “It is our hope that the new artificial intelligence graduate program will encourage and enable people with a background in engineering, computer science, data, physics or applied math to enhance their marketability to become leaders in this emerging field.”
Artificial intelligence has been identified by industry and government as the next disruptive technology, and the McKinsey Group recently reported global investments at the level of tens of billions of dollars by tech giants on R&D and deployment and AI acquisitions. In February 2019, the Department of Defense released its first-ever strategy on artificial intelligence, noting the development of AI capabilities as crucially important to all mission areas, and global leadership in AI technology is considered a national security priority.
Furthermore, corporate executives and government officials recognize the need to educate and train more scientists and engineers to meet the estimated workforce demand for AI-related jobs.
“We know it is of the utmost importance that Johns Hopkins leverages its expertise in education, science, and engineering, to cultivate artificial intelligence talent to meet that projected workforce demand,” said John Piorkowski, a chief AI architect at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and Artificial Intelligence program chair. “We have assembled a team of researchers, scientists, and engineering experts, including specialists from the JHU Applied Physics Lab, to teach advanced level courses relevant to the technology that drives AI.”
The artificial intelligence master’s program at Johns Hopkins Engineering offers a robust curriculum that will address the discipline and subdisciplines of AI, including natural language processing, robotics, neural networks, computer intelligence, and expert systems. Realizing the importance of translating research and theory into applicable outcomes, students will be able to make contributions to current and future research and development of new artificial intelligence concepts and methods.
