Environmental Planning and Management Program Overview

Rapid deterioration and consumption of our planets’ natural resources, immense waste production, environmental decline, and climate change are just some of the environmental issues threatening human health and the well-being of planet Earth.

The Johns Hopkins engineering management online program examines how environmental engineering and science affect real-world outcomes in public policy, decision-making, and the economy. Through the use of interactive learning tools and online course delivery, students learn how to plan, execute, and evaluate the most complex environmental projects of our time. All three of our environmental planning programs take into account factors like modern technology, social constraints, and the availability of financial resources, all taught by our experienced instructors.

Upon completing the environmental management program, you will:

  • Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of concepts and issues relevant to environmental sustainability and climate change
  • Solve quantitative problems and technical assessments relevant to environmental sustainability, climate change science, and green technologies
  • Critically analyze and review a range of pertinent literature, case studies, and documentaries.
  • Understand major U.S. environmental laws and regulations and how they affect organizations and individuals.
  • Employ techniques to manage organizations, personnel, and external resources.
  • Construct and/or critique an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Record of Decision (ROD) for an environmental project.
  • Apply tools of economic analysis, including benefit-cost analysis to public sector policy or investment in environmental projects.

Comparing Engineering For Professionals Environmental Programs

At Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals, we offer three different programs that cater to various aspects of environmental engineering. Each program offers a master’s degree, post-master’s certificate, and graduate certificate option.

  • The Environmental Engineering and Science program focuses on the fundamental concepts of physics, chemistry, biology, and geology as applied in the context of environmental issues, with less emphasis on design and management.
  • The Environmental Planning and Management program focuses on the relationships between environmental engineering/science and public policy analysis and the role of economic factors in the environmental management and water resources planning using decision-making tools.

If you have additional questions about the differences between these programs, please reach out to our admissions team, who can help you find the program best for you.

I liked the flexibility it provided as someone who works full time. I also enjoyed how it was relevant to the current work I am doing.

Janice Lam Snyder, ‘19 Environmental Planning and Management

It was great that the whole program was available online, and that classwork for the courses was flexible so that I could complete each week’s assignments on my own schedule while working full-time. The program offered a good, broad scope of courses available to fit my degree requirements and interests. Some of the professors were really great, engaged with their students well, and provided interesting and challenging content.

Environmental Planning and Management Program FAQs

Graduates who hold a masters in environmental management and planning can pursue careers in fields ranging from public policy to research to environmental law. Within each of these careers, you may specialize even further, becoming an expert in a specific region’s environment, a type of environmental concern, specific business concerns or become a specialized policymaker.

Environmental management is the management of an organization, government, or business and their impact on the environment. As a result, environmental managers research and establish policies, practices, and processes based on business, law, and science to help reduce harmful environmental effects.

Environmental engineers apply engineering principles to questions about infrastructure, building, and industrial operations to ensure more environmentally-friendly outcomes rather than focus on the overall management and plan of the impact.

Prerequisite course requirements must be completed at a regionally accredited university/college, and you must have received a B– grade or higher.
